Our Lady Of Mercy Parish’s Bulletin For September 20, 2015

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners:
Our ongoing Novena is going very well and I thank the Committee and all who are involved to make our Novena going well.
On the 2nd day of the Novena, we are honoured to have Rev. Joseph P. Nguyen, the Vicar General of the Archdiocese, who reminded us that it was not enough to see others doing the job but each of us must be involved on it. Just like a sick person, in order to be cured, it is not enough that the doctors and nurses are doing the work, the sick person has to be a part of the healing process too. The same is also true for us if we want to grow in our faith. It is not enough that the priest or other ministries are doing their work, we ourselves must be a part of the growing process. Father Joseph also reminds us that in order to have a green forest, each tree must be green. He also mentioned that as a Catholic, we carry the name of Jesus which means that it is a responsibility—we are our Lord Jesus’ co-workers. As we just launched last week our preparation for our 75th Parish Anniversary last Sunday, let us support each other and be a part in all the events that have been prepared by the anniversary committee. Be a doer not a watcher.

Sincerely in Christ,
Father Nicolas

Stewardship Reflections

“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”     (Mark 9:35)

Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another.  Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear.  We think it means that we must give up something that we want.  However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make.   In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.

Weekly Catechism:

III. The Only Son of God
443   Peter could recognize the transcendent character of the Messiah’s divine sonship because Jesus had clearly allowed it to be so understood. To his accusers’ question before the Sanhedrin, “Are you the Son of God, then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am.”50 Well before this, Jesus referred to himself as “the Son” who knows the Father, as distinct from the “servants” God had earlier sent to his people; he is superior even to the angels.51 He distinguished his sonship from that of his disciples by never saying “our Father,” except to command them: “You, then, pray like this: ‘Our Father,’” and he emphasized this distinction, saying “my Father and your Father.”52 (2786)
444   The Gospels report that at two solemn moments, the Baptism and the Transfiguration of Christ, the voice of the Father designates Jesus his “beloved Son.”53 Jesus calls himself the “only Son of God,” and by this title affirms his eternal preexistence.54 He asks for faith in “the name of the only Son of God.”55 In the centurion’s exclamation before the crucified Christ, “Truly this man was the Son of God,”56 that Christian confession is already heard. Only in the Paschal mystery can the believer give the title “Son of God” its full meaning.           (536, 554)
