Weekly Catechism:

CHAPTER TWO

“I BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST, THE ONLY SON OF GOD”
The Son of God Became Man
III. True God and True Man
469 The Church thus confesses that Jesus is inseparably true God and true man. He is truly the Son of God who, without ceasing to be God and Lord, became a man and our brother: (212)
“What he was, he remained and what he was not, he assumed,” sings the Roman Liturgy.95 And the liturgy of St. John Chrysostom proclaims and sings: “O only–begotten Son and Word of God, immortal being, you who deigned for our salvation to become incarnate of the holy Mother of God and ever–virgin Mary, you who without change became man and were crucified, O Christ our God, you who by your death have crushed death, you who are one of the Holy Trinity, glorified with the Father and the Holy Spirit, save us!”96

Year of Mercy Reflections
January 10 – Baptism of the Lord
“The contemporary Church is profoundly conscious that only on the basis of the mercy of God will she be able to carry out the tasks that derive from the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, and in the first place, the ecumenical task which aims at uniting all those who confess Christ.” -St. John Paul the Great

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

January 10th 2016 – Baptism of the Lord
“John answered them all, ‘I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming…he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit… ’” (Luke 3:16)

The Catholic Catechism states that “Jesus’ immersion in the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to themselves to do God’s will.” In other words, as baptized Catholics there is only one gift that we need to give to Jesus – the gift of ourselves. Once we surrender ourselves to God, we will know in our hearts what God calls us to do.

WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES 2016
Pope Francis, in his message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, urges us to do as Jesus did by proclaiming the good news of hope to all, especially to those in great need. He says: “The mission of the Church…is thus to love Jesus Christ, to adore and love him particularly in the poorest and most abandoned. Among these are migrants and refugees who are trying to escape difficult living conditions and dangers of every kind.” Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, Jan. 17 at 3pm at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Vancouver by Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, for the 5th year in our Archdiocese.

CATHOLIC PRESS COLLECTION
February is Catholic Press Month and with it comes the annual Catholic Press Collection. 2016 also marks the 105th anniversary of the Catholic Press Association. On Feb. 6-7, there will be a second collection at all parishes in the Archdiocese of Vancouver. This is a great opportunity for parishioners to show their appreciation for receiving The B.C. Catholic and to help defray your parish’s costs of mailing the paper. For those who don’t receive it, it’s also a great chance to help your parish since all the money collected stays in the parish. Please give generously Feb. 6-7 so we can continue to deliver to parishioners in the Archdiocese of Vancouver this vital, award-winning publication. Visit www.bccatholic.ca for more info on the Catholic Press Collection and the Catholic Press Association.
